2024-2028 African American/Black Student Success Grants, Oregon Dept of Education The Oregon Department of Education’s (ODE) Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI) is pleased to announce the release of the 2024-28 African American/Black Student Success Program Request for Applications (RFA). Please review all RFA materials prior to applying. All materials can be found on the OregonBuys website under “File Attachments”. 

African American/Black Student Success Advisory Group, Oregon Dept of Education ORS 329.841 directs the Department of Education to develop and implement a statewide education plan for African American/Black students who are in early childhood through post-secondary education programs. The Department has convened an advisory group comprised of members of the African American/Black community and other community partners from across the state of Oregon to advise the Department on the creation and implementation of the plan.

African American Services, Oregon Youth Authority OYA provides services for and collaborates with African American youth. OYA works with the community to create opportunities for emotional growth and community awareness. OYA supports and fosters an environment where African-American youth can develop and explore their self-identity. OYA offers African-American youth access to:

  • Cultural resources and mentorships

  • Cultural events

  • Youth development activities

The Black Student Union Alliance (BSUA), Black Educational Achievement Movement (B.E.A.M.) Hosford Middle School Black Student Union BSU is an active student group for students who identify as Black or African American to create community together. BSU sponsors cultural and social events, develops leadership skills, and provides an additional opportunity to learn about the African diaspora.

International School of Beaverton, Black Student Union ISB has many clubs which meet mostly after school, although a few meet during lunches.  Most of them are for high school students only.  Please contact the club advisor for further details.

Robert Gray Middle School Black Student Union An affinity space is a space for folks of shared racial and/or cultural identities to be in a community together.  They provide an important opportunity for people to gather to explore concepts, conditions and experiences based on racial and cultural realities. 

Part of anti-racist work is creating both spaces for affinity and spaces to come together, with the understanding that both spaces are actively working toward the same goal.

Thurston High School Black Student Union Springfield, OR THS BSU was created to promote a campus-wide culture of diversity, inclusion, and unity through activities that educate students and staff about black history and culture; and to support and nurture the cultural, social and educational experiences and needs of students of the African diaspora.  It is our mission to educate, inspire, support and empower our students with a variety of programming, professional and leadership development seminars, workshops, and social justice discussions. West Sylvan Middle School Black Excellence Group Black Excellence Group is a Racial Equity and Social Justice (RESJ) community partner of Portland Public Schools. We serve over 350 students with activity-based weekly Black Excellence group programming in Elementary and Middle Schools.

YouLead Oregon, formerly African American Youth Leadership Conference Salem-Keizer, OR Our main goal is to spread awareness of post-secondary education (Historical Black Colleges and Universities [HBCUs]), scholarships and career opportunities for African Americans and the BIPOC community.

The Association of African Students (AAS), Portland State University The Association of African Students (AAS) is dedicated to the constant exchange of socio-cultural information and understanding between PSU, its community, the City of Portland and African Students. AAS encourages students, faculty and staff, to come together and learn more about Africa. AAS has set among its goals to strive for excellent reputation within and around PSU.

Black Alumni and Friends Network, OSU Corvallis, OR The OSU Black Alumni and Friends Network (BAFN) is an official group open to Oregon State alumni and friends who identify with and support Pan- African, Afro-Caribbean, Black, African and African American communities. Meet regularly with Beaver alumni and build your personal and professional network, plus offer support, mentorship or career opportunities to current students and alumni.

Black Alumni Network, University of Oregon Alumni Association Eugene, OR  The UOAA Black Alumni Network is an alumni affinity chapter which was established in 2016 to connect Black alumni and provide support to current Black UO students. The Black Alumni Network encourages Black alumni, former students, current students, faculty and staff members, parents and family members of students, and members of the UO community who identify as Black or have a heart for the UOBAN mission to get involved with the group.

Black and Indigenous Student Success Connections, OSU Corvallis, OR The Dr. Lawrence Griggs Office of Black & Indigenous Student Success fosters rich and intentional relationships across the Oregon State University landscape in an effort to increase access, academic success and retention for Black, Native American, Pacific Islander and Alaskan Native students. Collaborating with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs, the office creates clear pathways for students to connect with important services and programming, including academic support, co-curricular opportunities, career development, recruitment and outreach.  

Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA), OSU Corvallis, OR The BGSA is an organization dedicated to making the Oregon State University (OSU) community aware of and responsive to the needs and concerns of black graduate students. The BGSA serves as a professional and social support body for graduate and undergraduate students. BGSA is particularly concerned with the recruitment and retention of black undergraduates into graduate school.

Black Student Nurses Umoja of OHSU The Black Student Nurses Umoja (BSNU) of OHSU mission is to provide community for Black and African American diaspora identified students within the OHSU School of Nursing undergraduate and graduate programs. BSNU's aim is to create space where truth and respect is upheld within its members. Provide a safe and brave environment to discuss issues that affect the Black/African American community within OHSU and Oregon. Advocate for student experiences and uphold anti-racist culture within higher education and the nursing profession. Connect and network within the profession and grow in professional development while contributing to URM pathways programs. Caribbean Community Connection, Portland State University Caribbean Community Connection (C3) is committed to pass on knowledge about the vastly diverse Caribbean islands.

Eastern Oregon University Black Student Union La Grande, OR The purpose of the Black Student Union of Eastern Oregon University is to foster a sense of community among all students of the African Diaspora at EOU. Our mission is to stimulate the intellectual, political, cultural, and social growth of all EOU students. Through enriching programs such as General Meetings, our Leadership and Mentoring Program, and community service, we seek to educate ourselves and the larger Eastern Oregon community, in hopes that awareness will spark action and ignite change in our communities. In addition, the Black Student Union shall serve as a resource to all other groups on campus serving students of the African Diaspora. It is our belief that “men and women of ordinary ability become Pillars of Strength when aroused by desire, stimulated by action.”

Lane Community College Black Student Union Eugene, OR The Black Student Union is a student-based organization focused on the cultural, social, and academic needs of African-American students attending Lane. It seeks to build cultural and community bridges in the general context of the academic environment.

The BSU is committed to the development of cross-cultural ties with all groups on campus and in the community at large. The office is located in the Multi-Cultural Center, Building #1, room 206.

L.E.A.D: Legacy Education for Afrocentric Development Bend, OR LEAD's primary goal is to encourage high school students regardless of culture and background to pursue:

  • Build a network of culturally-led curriculum focused developing agency.

  • Work to address the unique challenges faced by Black students 

  • While providing them with the necessary resources and opportunities to thrive.

The LEAD Program also plays a crucial role in supporting Black student success. Focused on providing leadership programming, ongoing academic support, restorative justice services, and leadership conferences to empower Black students. 

Lewis & Clark Black Student Union The Black Student Union aims to create an accountable and safe space for people of color on campus, as well as allies. We are a community centered around critical dialogue, political action, and social justice.

Linfield University Black Student Union Linfield's Black Student Union (BSU) brings together and acknowledges individuals of all diversities while striving to especially give unique insight and education in Black culture. BSU is open to all self-identified Black students, as well as allies and those interested in learning more!

Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center, OSU Corvallis, OR The mission of the Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center is to complement the academic program of studies and enrich the quality of campus life for African and African-American students on-campus and online at Oregon State University.

Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center, UO Eugene, OR Spurred by student demands, and made possible by grassroots support and donor gifts, the new Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center will be an academic, cultural, and social home for the UO’s Black students and the community. The center is named for Lyllye Reynolds-Parker, a civil rights activist and UO alumna who touched countless lives of UO students in her career as an academic advisor.

National Association of Black Journalists, University of Oregon Eugene, OR As a collective, UO NABJ strives to strengthen the voice of BIPOC students on campus by providing a safe space for collaboration and a platform to share their stories and experiences. Together we hope to advance journalism by increasing the diversity of perspectives across all media.

The Nia Black Scholar Living-Learning Community, OSU Corvallis, OR The Nia Black Scholar Living-Learning Community offers a residential experience for students with a shared interest in centering Black people and people of the African diaspora. Nia allows students to build strong community, explore racial identity and understand what it means to be Black and African American in Oregon and at Oregon State University. Nia, one of seven Nguzo Saba, Kwanzaa principles, means “to make our collective vocation the building and development of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness."

Pacific University Black Student Union Forest Grove, OR Black student union gives safe, supportive, and inclusive space to any and all Black and African American students here at Pacific University.

Portland State University Black Student Union The BSU serves as a social, intellectual and political community for students of the African diaspora through education, organizing and action. Due to the lack of representation for students of the African Diaspora, we come together for the purpose of establishing visibility on campus for recruitment, retention and success of individuals within our community.

Portland Community College Black Student Union The mission of the Black Student Union (BSU) is to support and hold an intellectually engaging space for the diverse population of students who identify as Black and/or African-American on the campuses of Portland Community College and the surrounding Portland Metro area.

Portland State University Pan African Commons The Pan-African Commons cultivates cultural, personal, academic, and professional development and opportunities through programming and resources that foster empowerment, enrichment, and principled solidarity that advocates liberation among peoples in the African diaspora.

Social Justice and Equity Center, Southern Oregon University Ashland, OR  The Southern Oregon University Social Justice and Equity Center endeavors to create an inclusive program that promotes academic achievement, celebrates diversity, and supports the rich life experiences of the SOU community.
