Senior Programs & Activities

Africa House- Senior Services Senior Services programming is a bridge between our community's elders and mainstream society. The congregate meal-site is a popular program and serves to diminish social isolation and encourage independence. The elders who attend the program at IRCO's Africa House call the building their second home. They come to socialize, eat culturally specific food, learn new skills, and access resources they qualify for. This program is often a lifeline for our elders.

IRCO helps local immigrant, refugee, and other diverse elders thrive by providing direct services and linkages to essential community resources such as:

  • Transportation

  • Citizenship Classes

  • Senior Law Clinics

  • Case Management

  • Health Workshops

  • Options Counseling

  • Recreational Activities

  • Information & Referrals

We strive for seniors in our community to live independent, healthy lives. Our program also serves meals to seniors aged 60+ and people with disabilities (all ages).

Albina Sports Program- Adult Walking Team The primary goal of the teams is to promote general health and wellness for men and women through organized walking activities. We accomplish these goals by increasing the awareness and need for physical activities among adults.  We encourage community participation by intentionally walking throughout our neighborhoods and promoting walking activities to community members.

Albina Walking team is broken up into two categories Solefull Masters (40 and up) and Classic Soles (50 and up). We walk year around with the Portland to Coast walk our main event.

Black Food Sovereignty Coalition- Grandma’s Hands       Grandma’s Hands is a platform for Black grandmothers to share family recipes and food traditions with future generations. The program provides a bag of fresh produce grown by Black farmers and brings everyone together virtually to learn how to prepare the featured recipe together. The Grandma’s Hands program today is the collective gift that Black Grandmas from our community have given us. We are honored to support them in their work.

Mercy Connections- Elderly Assistance We are a Culturally Specific Nonprofit Organization that serves as a vital bridge, connecting West African refugees, immigrants and other Blacks in the Portland Metropolitan Area to community resources.

At Mercy Connections, we care for our elders by ensuring that they are able to live in safe environments and provide healthcare and preventative services information, transportation, and connections to other community resources. Our programs include:

  • Health and Preventative Services Education

  • Office space for gathering (twice a week)

  • Food Boxes (both traditional and American)

  • Transportation – TriMet Passes (future program)

Urban League Multicultural Senior Center Our Multicultural Senior Center is an activity center for the only Black, culturally-specific senior service program in the State. In addition to the many daily activities, the Center also provides some health care and preventative services including blood pressure checks, t'ai chi and more.
